![]() But there were many stereotypical aspects to it that I couldn’t ignore.įor instance, Alice was found in the middle of the street wearing a white nightgown… why is it that in many horror movies, there is always a young woman wearing a white nightgown? Who even wears white nightgowns like that? I think it is the whole stereotypical “pure soul, woman-in-white” thing.Īlso, Fenn is the stereotypical non-believer, non-practicing Catholic, who tries to redeem himself by saving Alice from Mary. The movie had potential for sure, I am a fan of supernatural horror that involves demons, the church, and hell. (I won’t spoil the ending here, don’t worry!) Time is running out and Fenn and the doctor have to stop the service before Mary can take her soul. Her worshippers will pledge devotion to her 3 times and upon the third time, she will take their souls and condemn them to hell. The Vatican priest informs Fenn that, according to the Satanic rites, Mary will perform a mockery of the Holy Trinity. Til Fenn broke the doll and released the spirit, of course… The townspeople burned her alive and hanged her, her ashes buried in a kern doll with the date Febru(February 31 chosen because the date will never occur, so it was meant as a way to trap Mary’s evil spirit forever). They covered her face with a mask of the Virgin Mary’s face, to show how her miracles and healings were falsely hiding behind the Virgin Mary. The townsfolk didn’t believe her so they submerged her into the river and she admitted that she was working with the devil, and her miracles were anything but holy. They find out the book is a journal written by Father Prescott in the 1800s, who described Mary, a local witch, who performed miracles and claimed they were from the Virgin Mary who was working through her. She is planning a service at the tree shrine for all the followers and believers.įenn and the doctor come across the same book that Father Hagan previously did. As they search for answers, Alice is spreading the word about the Virgin Mary and the miracles working within her. But he sees a cloaked figure with no face for a few seconds behind Alice…Ĭome Play (2020) Movie Review: Technology and the Window to Evilįenn and the doctor race against time to try to find out what is going wrong, as they knew Father Hagan would never kill himself (a sin within the Catholic church). She cures his emphysema while he is in the middle of a cough attack, by asking him if he believes in Mary… His cough attack subsides and he can breathe normally again. According to him, the 3 main requirements for a miracle to be considered real and genuine are:įenn later dreams of an old house behind a blood-red river, and a cloaked, faceless figure coming for him…Īnother miracle happens to Alice’s disbelieving uncle, Father Hagan (William Sadler). If he can’t disprove them, then the church will consider the miracles to be genuine. The Vatican sends a priest (Diogo Morgado) to Banfield to try to disprove Alice’s miracles. She heals a boy with muscular dystrophy, just by asking him if he believes in Mary, and to walk.įenn has his story now and the news of Alice’s miracles spread through the media. Rumors spread and the townsfolk come to see her again. ![]() So I was not sure what to expect in the film, but I was excited to see if it was worthwhile. It is based on the 1983 book by James Herbert called “Shrine,” a book I had not read prior to watching the film. Going into the movie, I knew little about it except what I gathered from the few previews I had seen, and that it had religious overtones and involved a journalist and the Catholic church. This was not his first horror movie though, as I also enjoyed his portrayal in the 2012 film “The Possession.” If you are a Walking Dead fan, you know the power that Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character exuded, and I was excited to see him in a new film. As an avid horror fan, I was excited to see a new horror movie come out finally! And in my favorite genre too: supernatural horror.įinding out Jeffrey Dean Morgan was in the film was also a plus. In some areas, cinemas were still closed, including my hometown, so I saw the previews but had to pay to rent the film on Prime in order to watch. The Unholy is one such movie that came out in April 2021. As the coronavirus lockdowns were nearing their end around the world, theaters started opening back up and featuring new movies.
